Water

The Water subcamp is the 14-17 year olds. A dedicated subcamp for Explorers and Rangers. They may camp by themselves or camp on our subcamp and be fed by their “feeder” group in another subcamp. Our subcamp is our own little reservoir on Charnwood. Water released from the reservoir flows through turbines to produce electricity. It is often called Hydropower.

You can contact the team on water@charnwood.org

Water Subcamp Leader

I have been involved with all aspects in scouting since I was a beaver and now enjoy organising and working with Young People of all ages. I am a Network Leader and Group Scout Leader which is great to get the full view of all the sections as Beavers can come up with great ideas just as much as Network, which gives me a full spectrum of scouting.

In 2016 I took on a joint Sub Camp Leader for the senior section. This was my first time as sub camp leader and alongside other leaders with past experience I found it useful organising the sub camp as a team. Last Charnwood we had the Biggest Sub Camp to date and it was a hard task organising it all but was great to see the enjoyment and involvement from the young people.

Me and my family are looking forward to making the Senior Sub Camp amazing again!

I joined Girlguiding as a Rainbow, becoming a Young Leader at 2nd Oadby Rainbows in 2010. During my time at university I opened two Rainbow units in Bath, and was a Youth Ambassador at Charnwood 2016. I’m most excited for arrivals and the opening ceremony at Charnwood, where you truly get an impression of the size of the camp, and the excited atmosphere.

Water Subcamp Leader

I started as an adult leader in 1993 as an ASL (with Mr Richard Coppock as SL) with my own group in 102nd Aylestone. Since then I have mostly been involved in the older sections; Ventures and Explorers. I ran Blaby Explorers for several years taking it to a peak of 45 Explorer scouts on the books. I’m a Queens Scout and have my Gold DofE. I was also recently awarded my Medal of Merit (pending presentation).

In 2005 and 2007 I was deputy team manager for EuroJAM/WSJ at Gilwell, putting a team of volunteers together, 18 months prior to the event, to build and manage the Challenge Valley obstacle course through woodland next to “The quick”. This was then re-developed for 2007 WSJ. In 2007 we had 700 participants per hour using the activity!

I’ve been involved with Charnwood since 1991. In 1991 as shop staff, activity zone manager, sub camp leader, camp warden and in 2016, deputy camp director (Scouts). A very challenging role but equally rewarding. Whilst this was predominantly a management role with perhaps less direct involvement with the scouts and guides, previous jobs at this event were certainly more hands on when it came to working with participants. We have one of the most experienced sub camp teams I’ve ever worked with, so 2019 is promising to be the most memorable yet. I’m looking forward to being on sub camp again and seeing all the participants have an amazing experience
